Challenge
“I was laid-off at my job, could not find new work, and was asked to leave the apartment I was renting due to inability to pay - all the while becoming severely depressed.”
Before: Michelle’s was living in a homeless shelter, battling her depression while unsuccessfully searching for a job.
After: Michelle now feels healthier, and has been successfully employed in the field she most enjoys since May 2009.
What it took to make the difference…
“While homeless, I was able to stay with a friend for a couple years, but then I had to leave. Before I left my friend’s apartment, I was receiving help from Stout Street Clinic for my depression. When I became homeless, I was then referred to the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless, where I was able to meet with a case manager. I was then referred to the Department of Human Services, where I was given information about Assistance to the Needy Disabled and also a hotel voucher until space was available at the Samaritan House shelter.
It was while I was at Samaritan House that I found out about Bayaud Enterprises. Bayaud Enterprises referred me to Denver Vocational Rehabilitation, and then gave me paid transitional work within the Samaritan House. I was a resident of the shelter for just over 2 months and then stayed at a family hotel managed by the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless until I found housing. I began the paid transitional work program with Bayaud Enterprises in Samaritan House July 2008, which built up a lot of self-confidence for me and then I was relocated to Bayaud’s main office February 2009, where I was assisting with the front desk and their GOST instructor.”
Now I’m successful.

Lessons Learned
Through a collaboration of resources, Michelle was able to receive the help she needed. She completed transitional employment to help rebuild her self-confidence, and used the skills gained there to help transition into successful employment.
